Guide

How much does a competition website cost?

Every cost of running a UK competition website: platform, design, payments, legal, domain and marketing, with typical figures.

In short

Expect a platform fee (on Raffinity from £349 a month in Early Access, with no per-order fees), payment processing fees and possibly a one-off security check fee, a few hundred pounds for solicitor-written terms, a domain at around £10 to £20 a year, and your prize and marketing budget. A custom design on Raffinity is £1,999 one-off.

Platform

Competition platforms charge either a monthly fee plus a per-order fee, or one monthly fee. Per-order fees of 10p to 17p look small, but at 5,000 orders a month 17p is £850. Raffinity plans are £449, £699 and £949 a month by revenue band, or £349, £599 and £849 during Early Access, with no per-order fees.

Design

Themes are included on most platforms. A custom design costs more: on Raffinity it is £1,999 one-off, plus your monthly plan.

Payment processing

Your payment provider charges a fee on each card payment. New competition businesses can also face a one-off fee for security and compliance checks. These costs apply whichever platform you use.

Legal

Solicitor-written terms and conditions usually cost several hundred pounds. It is money well spent.

Domain and email

A domain name costs around £10 to £20 a year. Hosting, scaling and transactional email are included on Raffinity.

Prizes and marketing

Prizes are your biggest cost, so price tickets to cover them. Most sites also spend on social ads from the start. Server-side tracking helps that budget go further by teaching your ads which players actually buy.

WordPress costs to watch

A WordPress site can look cheaper at first, but premium plugins, developer time and hosting that can cope with draw night add up. Hosting alone can run into the hundreds or thousands a month at higher traffic.
